AUBURN, Mass. - Shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, Auburn firefighters responded to the Mass Turnpike near the area of mile marker 89 westbound for a reported tractor trailer unit on fire.

According to Auburn Fire Chief Stephen Coleman Jr., "upon arrival to the scene firefighters found a mobile classroom that was being hauled on a flatbed trailer to the city of Springfield."

While the fire department regularly responds to building fires, fighting a fire in a building on wheels had its challenges.

"The fire appeared to have started in a brake drum that quickly spread to the wooden structure," Coleman said. "Firefighters had to cut the floor of the classroom to gain access to the insulated bay that was burning beneath the floor."

The fire was contained to the floor. Westbound traffic was slowed for about an hour while firefighters brought the fire under control.
